Massafra is a very old town, cited already in 971, it is the guardian of a lost universe: the rocky civilization. Massafra is made unique because of the ravine of San Marco which cuts it in two big parts. They are connected by bridges offering a beautiful landscape that is reminiscent of American canyons.

It is recommended to visit the basilian crypts of SantAntonio Abate, San Marco, Candelora. They were carved in the tufa and decorated with frescoes. The sanctuary of Madonna della Scala (1731) is into the ravine. You reach it going down by a spectacular Baroque staircase made up of 125 steps. The crypt of Buona Nuova (XIIIth century) is in front of the Sanctuary.

Massafra has a joyful Carnival that involves the whole population. Every year the artisans make new allegoric paper-pulp carts that go downtown in the parade.
